MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – AUGUST 24, 2026 – Fall in the Lowcountry means cooler mornings, cross-country meets, race training, neighborhood walks and a renewed motivation to get outside. But before adding more miles, local footwear experts at Blue Sky Endurance and The Foot Store say there is one important place to start: your feet.
Following Blue Sky Endurance’s acquisition of The Foot Store, the two longtime Mount Pleasant businesses are bringing together expertise that spans performance running, walking, foot comfort and everyday footwear.
“People often come in asking for a particular shoe because a friend loves it, a coach recommended it or they saw it online,” said Catherine Hollister, owner of Blue Sky Endurance and The Foot Store. “But the best shoe isn’t necessarily the most popular shoe. It’s the shoe that fits you—your foot, your activity and what you want to accomplish.”
One Size—or Shoe—Doesn’t Fit All
The choices facing consumers have never been greater. Shoes now come in different cushioning levels, heel-to-toe drops, widths, support profiles and geometries. Add carbon plates, super foams and constantly changing models, and finding the right pair can quickly become confusing.
That is where shopping locally can make a difference.
Instead of starting with a brand or model, the staff at Blue Sky Endurance and The Foot Store start with the person. How will the shoe be used? What has worked—or not worked—in the past? How does the customer’s foot fit into the shoe? Most importantly, how does it actually feel?
Sometimes the answer is the shoe a customer expected. Often, it isn’t.
“Fit is personal,” Hollister said. “Our job isn’t to put everyone in the same shoe. It’s to give them good options, explain the differences and help them find the one that feels right for them.”
From Everyday Comfort to the Starting Line
That philosophy is strengthened by the combination of two businesses that have traditionally served customers from different ends of the footwear spectrum.
For more than 25 years, The Foot Store has helped Lowcountry residents seeking comfortable, properly fitted footwear, including many customers experiencing foot-related challenges. Former owner and certified pedorthist Carolyn continues to work with customers and share the expertise that has earned her a loyal following throughout the Charleston area.
Blue Sky Endurance, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, specializes in running and endurance sports and works with everyone from new walkers and runners to high school athletes, marathoners and triathletes.
Together, the stores can serve a much broader spectrum of customers—from someone who simply wants to walk the neighborhood comfortably to an athlete chasing a personal best.
Five Tips Before Buying Your Next Pair of Shoes
As activity increases this fall, the Blue Sky Endurance and Foot Store teams recommend:
-
Shop for your foot, not someone else’s. A shoe that works beautifully for a friend may not work for you.
-
Think about what you’re using the shoe for. Walking, daily running, racing, standing all day and cross-country can require very different footwear.
-
Don’t assume you know your size. Sizing can vary between brands and even between models from the same brand.
-
Try more than one option. Comparing shoes side-by-side can make differences in fit and feel much easier to recognize.
-
Comfort matters. Don’t assume a shoe needs to be “broken in” before it feels good.
A Local Alternative to Guessing Online
With online reviews, influencers and shoe rankings available at the tap of a screen, consumers have more footwear information than ever before—but more information doesn’t always make choosing easier.
Hollister believes that creates an even greater role for specialty retail.
“You can read a hundred reviews about a shoe, but none of those reviewers have your feet,” she said. “There is still tremendous value in being able to come into a store, talk to someone who knows footwear, try several options and leave feeling confident about what you’re wearing.”
And whether the goal this fall is a finish line, a daily walk or simply getting through the day more comfortably, Hollister says the starting point is the same.
“Your goals are personal. Your shoes should be, too.”
