Bob Ojala, renowned marine surveyor and author, has released his latest book, Crew’s Ship Affairs: Merging Cultures and Romance Aboard Ship. A gripping and eye-opening exploration of life aboard a cruise ship, Ojala’s work delves into the unsung lives of merchant mariners and the culture they create while working tirelessly on the high seas.
Have you ever wondered what goes on below the passenger decks on a cruise ship? Bob Ojala, with his extensive experience in the Maritime Industry, takes readers into the heart of this fascinating world. Drawing from his time inspecting over 165 cruises, Ojala offers an authentic glimpse into the exciting yet often dangerous careers of the crew, whose jobs are far from the glamorous image many people may associate with the maritime industry.
Most of the stories in Crew’s Ship Affairs are based on actual people and events, including Ojala’s personal experiences while working in the field. His unique insights into the lives of those working behind the scenes offer readers a deep appreciation of the maritime industry’s challenges and the personal sacrifices that the crew make to serve passengers.
Bob Ojala earned a BSE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan. His career spans several decades, including four years in the U.S. Coast Guard, seventeen years with the American Bureau of Shipping, and seven and a half years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. For over thirty-five years, Bob has been active in marine surveying and consulting, traveling the world to inspect cruise ships, tankers, dry docks, and even warships. He has also investigated accidents, pollution incidents, and even accidental deaths.
Despite his thrilling career in the maritime industry, Bob never aspired to be a sailor. Instead, he pursued his passion for ship design and eventually found himself working on the ground as a field surveyor. His transition from the design office to working in shipyards and overseeing ship construction gave him a unique perspective on the industry, which he shares with readers in his books.

In his latest book, Bob aims to reveal the true lives of sailors and workers aboard ships, who endure long hours and months away from their families to provide a vital service. He sheds light on the hardships and sacrifices of these hard-working individuals, often living in close quarters and supporting each other in ways that are unique to life aboard a ship. While relationships develop on board, they differ vastly from those formed on land, making for a fascinating and intimate portrait of maritime culture.
Through Crew’s Ship Affairs, Bob Ojala hopes to foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the men and women who work aboard ships, often in dangerous conditions and at great personal cost. These sailors and workers are not just doing a job, they are supporting families and contributing to the safety of passengers across the globe.
